Research Facilities
The Advanced Photonics Research Institute (APRI) operates a state-of-the-art photonics research facility located on the campus of the Gwangju Institute of Science and Technology (GIST) in Gwangju, Korea. The institute provides advanced experimental environments and large-scale research infrastructure to support cutting-edge studies in optical science and photonic technologies.
A distinctive feature of APRI is its world-class high-power laser infrastructure. The institute operates one of the most powerful ultra-intense laser facilities in the world, enabling frontier research in extreme light–matter interactions and high-energy photonics. These facilities support a wide range of experimental studies, including laser–plasma interactions, particle acceleration, high-energy photon generation, and advanced photonic applications.
Beyond its flagship laser systems, APRI maintains a broad range of experimental laboratories and shared research platforms supporting interdisciplinary research in photonics. These include facilities for nonlinear spectroscopy, nano-photonics, optical materials and devices, fiber lasers, and biophotonics. The institute also provides precision optical laboratories, advanced measurement environments, and collaborative research spaces designed to facilitate high-impact scientific research.
Through these research infrastructures, APRI serves as a national hub for photonics research, supporting both fundamental scientific discovery and the development of innovative photonic technologies.
