Overview
The Advanced Photonics Research Institute (APRI) was established in May 2001 at the Gwangju Institute of Science and Technology (GIST) to advance optical science and photonic technologies in Korea.
Photonics industry is a science-based industry built upon fundamental disciplines such as optics and physics. Because continued technological competitiveness in this field requires the accumulation of core technologies and sustained innovation, APRI was founded to bring together leading researchers in optical science and photonic engineering and to develop both fundamental and applied photonic technologies.
The institute was also created to support the growth of the Gwangju Photonics Industry Cluster within the Gwangju Advanced Science and Technology Complex. By providing world-class research infrastructure and fostering interdisciplinary collaboration, APRI has contributed to strengthening Korea’s capabilities in photonics research and technology development.
In 2025, the institute was elevated to the institute-status within GIST, reflecting its expanded role as a national hub for photonics research and innovation.
