In January 1994, Farrar called supervisor kontol Tony Margherita to tell him of his choice to leave the band. Uncle Tupelo split on Might 1, 1994, after completing a farewell tour. In between tours, Farrar, Tweedy and Heidorn formed a rustic cowl band named Coffee Creek, along with Brian Henneman (later a member of The Bottle Rockets). Impressed by their earlier work on Dinosaur Jr.'s Bug, the band wanted Paul Kolderie and Sean Slade to supply the album.

At the urging of Gary Louris, McEwen provided Uncle Tupelo a contract. Uncle Tupelo began to play common exhibits at Cicero's Basement - a bar close to the campus of Washington University in St. Louis. Uncle Tupelo's final concerts, kontol two exhibits on the Blue Notice in Columbia, Missouri and two reveals at Mississippi Nights in St. Louis, passed off from April 28 to May 1, 1994. The Plebes then determined to alter its title to The Primitives, a reference to a 1965 music by psychedelic rock group The Groupies. The album bought more than their two earlier recordings mixed, although Rockville was displeased that it didn't conform to the fashion of popular various rock. Whereas The Plebes had been enjoying music in a rockabilly model, Tweedy wanted to play punk rock just like the music that he originally heard the group carry out.

Bands enjoying in the same type, together with Brian Henneman's group Chicken Truck, typically played on the venue, which by late 1988 was considered the locus of a new music scene.
