Path of Exile Item Upgrades

item upgrader upgrades are a common and important way to improve the performance of many items in Path of Exile. They can be a great source of extra damage, more AD or even more affixes.

Often times however upgraded Common and Magic gear is beaten out by Rare-grade equipment due to their higher requirements.

Armor

Armor upgrades are a type of upgrade that can be applied to weapons and armor items. They increase the effectiveness of the item that they are connected to. Armor upgrades can be found in the world of the game and can be purchased from Blacksmiths at bonfires. They can also be salvaged using a specialist or higher salvage kit to retrieve upgrade components from other items.

The level of an armor's or weapon's upgrade determines the amount of damage it can take on. The absorption of damage by an armor piece will increase as it is upgraded to the maximum upgrade level. It's important to remember that this will increase the weight of the armor, therefore it must be heavier.

There are many different kinds of armor upgrade available in the game. Each has a different impact. Certain upgrades grant armor a greater number of health points, while others make it lighter and more powerful. The name of the upgrade will tell you the kind of upgrade that an item upgrading will receive, as shown below.

Certain upgrades require magic or a hybrid technology and magic, which is shown by the "Magic" and "Hybrids" entries in the table below. Furthermore, some upgrades require charges to use, which is identified by the "Charges" entry in the table below. These charges are either continuously updated or never expire, depending on the upgrade.

The cheapest method of upgrading armor is by using Iron Ore, which can be found through exploring the surroundings and looting chests of minor loot. Titanium is more expensive, but can be found in the smelters of Orgrimmar and Stormwind City. Certain upgrades, like the Reforge or the Hot Potato Books can only be applied on high-level armor pieces. These upgrades can provide significant improvements in stats and are a worthwhile investment, especially for 1-handed weapons.

Upgrading a piece of armor to the highest upgrade level will dramatically increase its defense values, but the player should be aware that putting on weight will drastically reduce its speed and agility. It is not recommended to upgrade armor beyond +9. The boost in defense typically isn't worth the weight and power expenses of the upgrades.

Weapons

Weapon upgrades give players the ability to improve certain aspects of their weapon. For instance an upgrade could increase the damage dealt by the shells of a shotgun or the accuracy of the rifle that snipes. Some weapons have special upgrades to improve their inherent qualities. They include Frictionless Materials (improves stability and reduces the risk of the risk of overheating) and Kinetic Coils (increases the speed of projectiles to cause more damage).

The majority of upgrades to weapons require a whetblade, one of three Power Dices and a different amount Minerals and Erons. These can be obtained by completing Side Quests or killing a certain amount of monsters and bosses.

To upgrade an equipment set, weapon piece or Whetblade you need to visit the NPC [Armor] Boboko located in Central Flarine, and pay her an upgrade fee of a certain number of Bars. The higher the upgrade level, the more bars are required to complete it. If you have multiple upgrade materials the cost of upgrading will be less.

In Chapter 2: Season 5, the ways to upgrade your equipment and weapon sets has changed a bit. Prior to Chapter 2 Season 5 you could upgrade your weapon or equipment by paying a certain amount of Bars. You could do this until the weapon or equipment reached its maximum upgrade level at which point the upgrades would be reset.

It's still possible, but it is dependent heavily on RNG. Instead, you're better off going to the stores and buying gear with low upgrade levels, but good base scores and stat distributions. These gears have a better likelihood of granting you highest level of blessings and perks.

To improve their skills quicker, players usually prioritise upgrading their weapons. Players should also upgrade the weapons their teammates utilize to increase their power. For instance, Shepard should consider upgrading the M92F to unlock the Beretta M93R, which will increase its utility when accompanied by biotic specialists like Grunt and Tali.

Jewels

Jewels are used in the sockets of armor and weapons, enhancing a stat and providing secondary effects. Jewelry crafting is the process of making them, where you combine a gemstone with a number specific reagents on a jewelry table. The higher the tier of the jewel, the better its secondary effect. These reagents can be found around the world through Treasure Goblins, World Bosses and, sometimes, by salvaging Legendary equipment. You can also buy them from The Jeweler in exchange for gold and Scattered Prisms.

The quality of a jewel can be improved upon by the Jeweler, in stages that range from Crude to Royal. Based on the tier of the jewel it can provide different stat boosts when inserted into gear, weapons and jewelry.

The Jeweler can craft all kinds of gems, apart from the rare and legendary ones, which require an appropriate level to obtain. Jewels can be replaced with another one without damaging the original. However you can only swap out the jewels in an equipment piece only once.

Using more jewels in a movement can make it feel more comfortable and is typically used to enhance the aesthetics of the movement. The jewels can also enhance performance and create an outer layer that is more durable than metal so that repeated friction from pivots do not damage them.

A Glyphmaster can provide glyphs that can enhance the appearance of your shields and weapons. These glyphs provide a small boost and can be exchanged, however they are not guaranteed to show up as loot. Glyphs are like jewelry and can be upgraded by the Jeweler to exchange gold and Scattered Crystals. Glyphs can also be taken out from the inventory, and they are returned to the inventory. Other upgrade components such as traits or aegis can't be swapped, and can only be recovered by using an Upgrade extractor or salvaging using a Black Lion Salvage Kit, or Ascended Salvage tool.

Trinkets

Trinkets are pieces of equipment that offer a wide range of small but useful advantages to your hero. They are available in the starter area as rewards for personal stories or loot. They can also be obtained from vendors and by the completion of road interactions. They can also be found on the Trading Post, or crafted by jewelers.

The first trinkets that a player is able to unlock is the cloak, which gives a small, but valuable boost to movement speed and the ability to escape. After that, they'll be able to acquire rings, amulets, and necklaces in the same manner to the way a player obtains weapons and armor. Each piece of equipment has one upgrade slot that can accommodate either a universal or jewel upgrade. Universal upgrades are smaller and are able to be used on any device. Jewels cannot be upgraded or replaced, and can only be used with certain trinkets.

These trinkets grant additional buffs and abilities that are active even when the hero isn't fighting. This lets a hero become more efficient even when not in combat. It also helps compensate for the absence of good slots in the team or talent tree which would normally be filled by a hero's top stats.

A good rule of thumb for trinket upgrades is to prioritize BiS (Best-in-Slot) items that you aren't planning to replace in the near future, then any items with desirable stats but less important than the iLevel of the item that is being upgraded. This is especially true if you are looking to upgrade multiple statistics on an item upgrade. It's better to upgrade one important stat rather than two suboptimal ones.

Jungle players usually upgrade their yellow trinket to a red trinket at the beginning of the game. Top and mid players on the other hand, will choose a pink or green ward, depending on the matchup. These choices can impact a hero's ability to control the map.

In addition to the items mentioned above, players can also discover other trinkets in form of rewards and trophies throughout the game. These can be earned by completing certain milestones in the story. For example, completing a chapter’s main quest or beating the boss.
