WoW Upgrades - The Item Upgrader

Upgrades provide a guaranteed boost to specific stats. Each upgrade items increases the level of an item by +3. Each upgrade also increases the random substatus.

Upgraded gear generally sees greater value for trade, unless it has inherently low requirements (like the FB sorc's shield) or has a high stat variation (like the eth titan weapons). The latter are less valuable from upgrading due to the need to roll for a perfect version.

They are purchased by players from NPCs that sell upgrades to items in exchange for different currencies, and can also be found in random treasure lists. Once purchased, an upgrade can be used on any weapon, tool, or armor. The button will display the preview of an item upgrades's next level of upgrade, if there are enough materials.

The upgrade cost depends on the slot of the item and current item level, with weapons costing more than gloves or bracers for example. Each step costs 15 Flightstones and a variety of crests, with certain upgrades having a discount to reduce the cost of Flightstones or crests used. After an item has been upgraded to a certain amount and is degraded, it can be sold and returned to the upgrader for a lower amount of both currency types.

Many locations have upgraders for their items, including the main Island and a few outposts. The NPCs offer both an upgrade coupon and a possibility of obtaining the latest recipe. The discount for upgrades increases with the number of items being upgraded, and can be boosted by having players complete specific achievements or complete quests.

Unlike Cromwell in Baldur's Gate II, there is no item upgrader available in the beginning of Icewind Dale. Instead the NPCs that are available to help with upgrades are acquired via several methods that are both an improvement and a drawback.

Another important modification is that crests have one usage and it's crucial to make use of them in a responsible manner.
